Angus Tsui: forging ahead through sustainable design
Key takeaways
- Sustainability is central to ANGUS TSUI's creative vision. Their designs merge futuristic aesthetics with zero-waste principles, proving fashion can be environmentally responsible while remaining bold and experimental.
- Upcycling can deliver both impact and innovation. ANGUS TSUI's collaboration with DHL transformed retired courier uniforms into functional accessories, reinforcing circular design while strengthening the brand's global visibility and sustainability credibility.
- Growth and responsibility can go hand-in-hand. Leveraging DHL's tools and services, ANGUS TSUI scaled internationally while staying true to their sustainability values.
Since founding his eponymous fashion label ANGUS TSUI in 2014, Angus Tsui has been driven by a belief that fashion can grow in a way that is guided both by a commitment to environmental sustainability and by boundless imagination and striking beauty.
Much of Tsui’s design language is influenced by science-fiction forms and biomechanical structures. These influences, paired with his philosophy of sustainability, have contributed to the brand being described as experimental, forward-looking, and visionary. One of the most striking expressions of his zero-waste approach came from a collaboration that used materials sourced from decommissioned work clothes.
Breathing new life into the past
In 2024, Tsui was awarded the DHL GoGreen Plus Alumni Prize at the Redress Design Award, a competition that challenged designers to propose new lives for retired DHL courier uniforms. The result of this was the creation of the DHL x ANGUS TSUI Upcycled Collection, featuring a trio of accessories made from decommissioned DHL jackets, raincoats, cargo trousers, and quilted liners.
Originally designed for performance and durability, the retired uniforms were transformed into the Voyager Shoulder Bag, Versatile Sling Bag, and Journeyer Wallet. Besides using the water repellent fabrics from the uniforms, Tsui also chose to keep many of the original zippers and trims to minimize the use of new materials. This allowed for easier future repair or recycling while also maintaining a strong and tangible connection to the capsule collection’s functional history.
Completing the collection’s sustainability journey, the DHL X ANGUS TSUI Upcycled Collection was offered through a charity sale organized by DHL and Redress, with proceeds donated to Redress to support its efforts in helping emerging designers contribute to a more circular fashion industry.
Working on this collection had a profound impact on how Tsui approached his later collections. It reinforced his belief that sustainable design was not just about using new “green” materials, but about seeing the potential in what already exists. This philosophy of finding value in the discarded, where all materials have a creative future, became a prominent lens through which Tsui approached design, influencing how his label deconstructs and reimagines items.
Going global
For Tsui, the collaboration with DHL was also a boon for his brand. The upcycled collection received extensive publicity that extended beyond Hong Kong, significantly increasing ANGUS TSUI’s global presence.
“I noticed that traffic from different countries increased when we launched our collaboration with DHL. The collection had massive publicity, and we discovered new markets we had never reached before like Singapore, Malaysia, and Germany,” Tsui shared. “Many people learned about our brand because of this collaboration and then went on to explore our ready-to-wear collections or runway designs.”
This increased exposure brought a new challenge to Tsui—international shipping became an important part of everyday operations at ANGUS TSUI. Naturally, Tsui looked to DHL for solutions.
“DHL was definitely a game changer for us,” Tsui said.
Tsui gained knowledge from DHL’s GoTrade initiative that helps SMEs grow internationally by providing the tools, knowledge, and support they need to succeed in international trade. Through the initiative, Tsui and his team leveraged DHL’s My Global Trade Services (MyGTS) platform which gave them instant clarity on international shipping requirements and regulations, and other information such as import taxes and using the right Harmonized System codes. This was essential in helping the team with transparent pricing and building trust with their customers.
DHL’s sustainable solutions such as GoGreen Plus, which reduces CO₂e emissions through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), also enabled ANGUS TSUI stay true to their sustainability mission.
Beyond the label
To amplify ANGUS TSUI’s ethos of sustainability, Tsui launched ANCares, an educational charity project to promote and expand public understanding of sustainable fashion. Through ANCares, he works with local and global partners on various initiatives and also to present workshops, seminars, and exhibitions on the topic of sustainability.
For Tsui, the most powerful impact of ANCares is not the products created by its initiatives, but the people and the processes that are put in the spotlight. One project that illustrates this is their TINY STUDIO project, which was curated by interdisciplinary artist Chilai Howard.
For the showcase, a replica fashion workshop was created to feature the finished designs. But the spotlight was placed on Sandy, ANGUS TSUI’s beloved seamstress. The project was a great opportunity to honor the craftsmanship, dedication, and human touch behind every stitch made by one of Hong Kong’s most skilled seamstresses.

Having known Sandy since his graduate collection in 2013, Tsui found this to be profoundly meaningful. It showed how ANCares goes beyond environmental sustainability to social sustainability, to valuing the true heroes and the important human stories behind the fashion industry.
A decade of groundbreaking design
In 2025, ANGUS TSUI held their landmark 10th-anniversary exhibition A Decade of Creating Otherworldly Universe in Fashion. By showcasing their Acars initiative and highlighting their collaborations with DHL, Cathay Pacific, and American Eagle, the exhibition offered a retrospective look at the label’s journey.
The exhibition also displayed never-before-seen early works that included original sketches, prototypes, and archival pieces, laying bare their raw ideas and experiments that formed the foundations of ANGUS TSUI’s signature aesthetic. Important milestones were also celebrated, featuring pieces from their award-winning XenoFuturist collection and iconic stage costumes. ANGUS TSUI’s growth and development, from experimental sketches to internationally recognized designs, was plain to see.
“When people encounter my work, I want them to feel a sense of wonder and possibility. I hope people see that sustainable fashion isn’t about limitation or ‘settling for ordinary’. Instead, it can be avant-garde, futuristic, and visually thrilling. We can both embrace technology and coexist with nature,” Tsui shared.
More importantly, Tsui wants people to feel connected and empowered. Projects like ANCares are created to help the masses see that fashion is neither distant nor difficult to relate to. “It’s about real people and real stories, and we are all part of the story too,” noted Tsui.
A future built on sustainability, care, and mindfulness
Looking through Tsui’s oeuvre, it is apparent that what seems to shape Tsui’s work most consistently is a sense of care for both materials and people. His considered approach to design is rooted in a mindset that prioritizes longevity and respect for resources.
Tsui’s experiences with DHL highlight how these principles can apply across different parts of a product’s life. Workwear that once served a global logistics network found a second, more personal life. Tools that support international trade made cross‑border shipping more transparent. Emissions‑reduction programs helped reduce the footprint of global deliveries.
Together, these elements point towards a future for fashion that is guided by the belief that good design should be mindful of the world in which it exists.
As ANGUS TSUI embarks on its second decade, their journey is about going deeper and wider. Looking beyond established sustainable fabrics, they are exploring the use of plant-based fur, which they believe could be a transformative and viable alternative for the fashion industry. For their shows, they are working on creating truly immersive, sensory experiences through a collaboration with a music artist to produce original runway music.
ANGUS TSUI also aims to expand their ANCares universe by continuing to connect with corporations and brands to tackle textile challenges in grounded and meaningful ways, to show that creativity and positive impact can go hand in hand.
“Our sustainability journey is an evolving story,” Tsui said. “And we’re excited for the world to read our next chapter with us.”
