DHL Ocean Freight Market Update – August 2021

Ocean carriers, non-operating owners, investment banks and lessors have signed well over 300 vessel orders at Chinese, Korean and Japanese yards in the first of half of this year. These new ships will have a combined slot capacity of 2.88 MTEU, or 11.7 percent of today’s overall container fleet capacity of 24.47 MTEU.
Strong demand, in combination with soaring steel prices, has pushed newbuilding prices up by about 15 percent over the past six months, but that has not deterred new orders from carriers.
