Smart Container
What is a smart container?
A smart container is a standard freight container enhanced with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, GPS, and connectivity tools that provide realtime data on its location, condition, and security throughout a multimodal journey.
Why are smart containers important?
Smart containers close visibility gaps in multimodal transport by continuously reporting their location and the condition of the cargo. They help operators coordinate handovers, reduce delays, and act on disruptions more quickly. Smart containers also support sustainability by mitigating empty container repositioning and preventing spoilage of sensitive goods.
More broadly, smart containers are examples of the Smartification trend in logistics, in which analog assets are turned into connected, data-generating systems.
How do smart containers work?
Sensors are embedded in smart containers to monitor temperature, humidity, shock, tilt, location, and tampering incidents. The data are transmitted via a self-powered IoT gateway to cloud platforms. This enables real-time decision making, automated alerts, and more accurate ETA predictions across every mode of transport.
Where are they used?
Smart containers are used across sea, rail, road, and inland waterways. They integrate especially well with smart ports, which use IoT and automation to optimize flows through digital gates, yard planning, and security checks.
What benefits do they deliver?
By improving asset utilization and reducing congestion and idle time, smart containers improve supply chain reliability, reduce product loss, strengthen cargo security, optimize modal transfers, and support greener logistics.
