Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

Available in
The standardized format to exchange documents electronically among organizations.

Many trading documents, such as purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notifications were traditionally delivered as paper documents. Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has revolutionized this process by offering a standardized and automated approach to data transmission.

The EDI format establishes a standardized order, which requires specific information for each document format. Following these standards, the specific details of each document are then filled in. The system then sends the document by moving it directly from one organization’s computer application to another.

The adoption of EDI is particularly prevalent in sectors like retail, manufacturing, and logistics, where timely and accurate information exchange is critical. This streamlined process enhances efficiency, reduces manual errors, and ensures a seamless exchange of information between stakeholders.

Besides streamlining day-to-day operations, EDI establishes a foundation for more reliable supply chain management. It is widely used to send out Advanced Shipment Notices (ASN), minimizing lead time and ensuring that the recipient gets the message in real time to start planning their inventory as soon as possible.

As businesses embrace digital transformation, the functional capacity will continue to grow and expand, incorporating the Internet of Things, Blockchain, and Artificial Intelligence technology to offer even more support to business operations.
