Dunnage
Dunnage is used to safeguard cargo from damage caused by vibration, impact, or shifting during transit. It provides support and prevents excess movements and collisions between the cargo and the walls of the container.
Different types of dunnage have different uses. For instance, wooden pallets or crates elevate and support cargo to prevent direct contact with the floor or container surfaces. Inflatable air bags are placed in void spaces to fill gaps between cargo and provide cushioning and stability while foam cushioning materials are used to wrap fragile or delicate items. Strapping or tie-down systems are also used to secure and restrain cargo in place, preventing movement during transit.
Dunnage can also serve as a barrier against moisture. Materials such as plastic sheeting or moisture- absorbing agents may be used to protect the cargo from condensation or humidity that could cause damage or deterioration.
In addition, dunnage is sometimes utilized to separate and organize different items within a shipment. Dividers, partitions, or cushioning materials help to segregate cargo and simplify the process of loading and unloading.
