table from a senior executive of Warner Brothers in Burbank, California.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyjaxx.com\/\">Mighty Jaxx<\/a>, the company he founded, was only three years old then. At that moment, he only had one shot and a few precious minutes to convince one of the biggest media companies in the world to partner up with a small company from Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>Getting that face-to-face meeting in the U.S. was equal parts luck and due to his pro-activeness. The former came about when someone accidentally copied him in an email with the company\u2019s Global Head of Toys.<\/p>\n<p>Seizing the opportunity, Aw sent an email pitch to the top guy and surprisingly managed to get an invitation to the Warner Brothers headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the U.S. for the first time and almost died.\u00a0It&#8217;s just so scary, you know,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of a horror show, that meeting turned out to become a blockbuster for Mighty Jaxx, which was started on a budget of S$20,000. And they did it through passion, drive, and a deep understanding of the people they make products for.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Learning the tricks of the trade from scratch <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The company began life as a passion project of its founder, who used to work in digital media, developing and writing code for digital market spaces.<\/p>\n<p>But his real love was in figurines and collectibles, a hobby he had kept since he was a young boy. That hobby grew over the years, and he has his eyes especially on the items made by his favorite artists.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, he decided to turn his passion into a career and left for Shenzhen on a one-way ticket to learn how collectibles are manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>He spent a month knocking on the doors of factories, learning everything from molding, painting, and assembling the item, to shipping them out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe people there were nice enough to allow me to stay in their factories to understand the whole manufacturing process,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>After he came back to Singapore energized, he founded Mighty Jaxx. He had to learn how to build everything from scratch and, because he has only ever been a creative, found the process to be very challenging.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, he spent most of his time talking to people and staff instead of running a business. Best known for their anatomical dissection style, which they worked on with <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonfreeny.com\/pages\/about-us\">Jason Freeny<\/a>, a New York-based sculptor and toy designer, Mighty Jaxx now ships an array of fresh, new, and quirky collectibles to over 80 different countries worldwide.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Building global touchpoints with good logistics <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Another key lesson he learned in his entrepreneurial journey was that good partners are invaluable. This was the case when it came to logistics.<\/p>\n<p>In the early days of 2012, Jackson moved the company\u2019s warehouse back and forth between China, Hong Kong and Singapore. The company did this to find the most affordable shipment routes through ad hoc deliveries on their own and smaller-scale delivery partners.<\/p>\n<p>This approach, however, was riddled with problems. Customers were not able to track their items and would receive them late.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was only by partnering with DHL that they solved their supply chain issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a few years, we needed to go with someone reliable like DHL to provide the right information to the right people and to deliver our products in a timely fashion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, DHL Express Singapore became Mighty Jaxx\u2019s logistics provider for import, export and return shipments, all over the globe. This formed a bridge for the brand to venture out at scale.<\/p>\n<p>The company did encounter a stumbling block with Covid-19, when the virus forced a halt on operations at their production facility in China. But a reliable supply chain and a turnaround in operations helped successfully double their revenue over the past year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a global online business, last-mile delivery is actually a crucial step in our experience-driven approach. Its NFT, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mightyjaxx.com\/blogs\/news\/the-huntress-gaze-nft-auction-on-opensea-com\">Huntress Gaze<\/a>, sold for 1.1 Ethereum, or about US$2,163, in April 2021.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tapping into global fandom<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The value of partnerships is also clear when it comes to how Jackson approaches creative tie-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Besides exclusively creating new characters, the company also leverages characters from globally popular brands and reimagines them to create a unique product. All rights reserved.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em>Earlier this year, the <em>manga<\/em>-inspired film Demon Slayer broke U.S. box office records for foreign language films, opening to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2021\/05\/11\/what-s-behind-the-rise-in-popularity-of-anime--manga-and-cosplay-\">USD20 million<\/a> (\u20ac16.9 million) in sales. In 2019, the British Museum held perhaps the largest <em>manga<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediag.bunka.go.jp\/article\/article-17336\/\">exhibition<\/a> outside of Japan, attracting 180,000 visitors, many of whom belonged to a new, younger demographic.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a global phenomenon, <em>manga<\/em> (Japanese comics or graphic novels) has gained relatively little recognition in the entertainment industry, much less in the art world. However, with the launch of the first-of-its-kind <a href=\"https:\/\/mangaart.jp\/\">Shueisha Manga-Art Heritage project<\/a>, all that looks set to change.<\/p>\n<p>The project is the brainchild of Masashi Okamoto, who leads Japanese publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shueisha.co.jp\/en\/\">Shueisha<\/a>\u2019s digital business division. Yet, artists pour their heart into every page, breathing life into stories with intricate drawings. It is an art not lost on countless <em>manga<\/em> fans around the world, including Okamoto himself.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, increasingly advanced digital capture technology made it possible to preserve original artworks in fuller detail. Through Okamoto\u2019s heritage project, Shueisha will work directly with artists to reprint their original illustrations with light-resistant, pigmented ink on museum-quality 100% cotton paper. But that\u2019s just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe quality printing brings out the hidden details in the works otherwise wasted in digital publishing,\u201d said Okamoto. \u201cYou just can\u2019t appreciate the artists\u2019 detail, skill and enthusiasm through a smartphone screen.
