years, the period starting from October towards the end of the year had two obvious and clear trends.<\/p>\n<p>The first would be a slowing ocean market as the late summer peak shipping season drew to a close. This would generally overlap with the second trend: a burgeoning surge of air cargo demand and rates as shippers rushed products to shops in time for the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, however, that rough guide to fourth quarter trading patterns is proving rather obsolete. For starters, the container shipping peak season hardly registered. On the air freight front, there are almost no signs of a fourth quarter cargo surge. Certainly, the belief that 2022 would see the normalization of trading patterns after two years of Covid-19 disruption looks premature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lot.dhl.com\/dhl-air-freight-state-of-the-industry-october-2022\/\">DHL\u2019s October Airfreight State of the Industry<\/a> notes that a global average inflation rate of around 9 percent is expected this year. In fact, the soaring inflation is forecasted to last well into 2023, with \u201creduced purchasing power likely to create lesser demand\/volumes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, \u201clower sales and high inventory\u201d are already apparent across most sectors, with retail and manufacturing the most prominent sectors afflicted. Nomura expects real GDP growth in China to be just 2.2 percent this year versus 8.1 percent in 2021, with an export slowdown cited as a key headwind.<\/p>\n<p>Lockdowns also continue to impact supply chains in China. The <a href=\"https:\/\/theloadstar.com\/new-lockdowns-in-key-chinese-transport-hubs-hobble-supply-chains-again\/\">latest restrictions<\/a> hit key manufacturing hubs in Ningbo, Shanghai and Tianjin, with Ningbo in particularly affected during October.<\/p>\n<p>The outlook from key markets is also less than inspiring for air freight stakeholders. Inflation levels there are relatively low and are expected to fall soon. Global trade and investment suffered an unprecedented shock as Covid-19 constrained the production and transport of many goods. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/bank-overground\/2021\/how-has-covid-affected-global-trade\">Research shows<\/a> that in 2020, global trade fell by 8.9 percent, the steepest drop since the 2008 global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Trade in goods, however, also proved remarkably resilient, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ee65c76e-ff2c-452c-9488-210daea9f62f\">a key plank<\/a> underpinning economic recovery.
