Shippers have to re-think their approach as air cargo demand lowers and ocean capacity returns. <\/p>
During the pre-pandemic years, the period starting from October towards the end of the year had two obvious and clear trends.<\/p>\n
The first would be a slowing ocean market as the late summer peak shipping season drew to a close. This would generally overlap with the second trend: a burgeoning surge of air cargo demand and rates as shippers rushed products to shops in time for the holiday season.<\/p>\n
In 2022, however, that rough guide to fourth quarter trading patterns is proving rather obsolete. For starters, the container shipping peak season hardly registered. On the air freight front, there are almost no signs of a fourth quarter cargo surge. Certainly, the belief that 2022 would see the normalization of trading patterns after two years of Covid-19 disruption looks premature.<\/p>\n
DHL\u2019s October Airfreight State of the Industry<\/a> notes that a global average inflation rate of around 9 percent is expected this year. In fact, the soaring inflation is forecasted to last well into 2023, with \u201creduced purchasing power likely to create lesser demand\/volumes\u201d.<\/p>\nMoreover, \u201clower sales and high inventory\u201d are already apparent across most sectors, with retail and manufacturing the most prominent sectors afflicted. This is encouraging shippers to use ocean options wherever possible to limit inventory and reduce freight costs.<\/p>\n
The monthly report, however, also highlighted that volumes on the trans-Atlantic air trade remain comparatively strong compared to most markets, which is a positive sign from a global perspective.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore positively for customers, there are now a lot more air freight options available in most markets. Global capacity is up 18 percent in October this year versus 2021. In Asia, we\u2019re now seeing Cathay ramping up its flights and we\u2019re expecting fewer space constraints out of China following Golden Week,\u201d said Kelvin Leung, CEO, DHL\u00a0Global Forwarding Asia Pacific.<\/p>\n

Despite some positive signs in Asia, sentiment and the latest export volume data are tempering optimism, while the demand outlook is deteriorating. For example, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) said cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) in September 2022 fell 25 percent year-on-year.<\/p>\n
\u201cCargo volume was affected by global economic uncertainties, on-going geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global supply chains,\u201d reported AAHK. \u201cExports and imports saw decreases of 30 percent and 25 percent, respectively, compared to the same month last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cCargo traffic to and from key trading regions in North America and Europe registered the most significant decreases.\u201d<\/p>\n
The\u00a0DHL Hong Kong Air Trade Leading Index (DTI)<\/a>\u00a0 also reported declining sentiment in its latest Q4 results. \u201cAs the\u00a0traditional\u00a0peak season approaches, the\u00a0overall trade index retreated again\u00a0after recovering from the previous quarter,\u201d it concluded. \u201cConcerns over \u2018weak consumption demand\u2019, \u2018high logistics cost\u2019 and \u2018inflation\u2019 were reported by air traders.\u201d<\/p>\nLockdowns continue<\/h2>\n
Even if capacity at Chinese airports does increase, there are reasons to be cautious about both the economic and the supply chain outlook. Nomura expects real GDP growth in China to be just 2.2 percent this year versus 8.1 percent in 2021, with an export slowdown cited as a key headwind.<\/p>\n
Lockdowns also continue to impact supply chains in China. The latest restrictions<\/a> hit key manufacturing hubs in Ningbo, Shanghai and Tianjin, with Ningbo in particularly affected during October.<\/p>\nThe outlook from key markets is also less than inspiring for air freight stakeholders. Nomura expects the Europe area, which is suffering from surging energy prices, to be in recession from Q42022 until the end of 2023. The analyst firm also forecasts that a U.S. recession will begin this quarter.<\/p>\n

The overall Baltic Air Freight Index \u2013 calculated by TAC Index \u2013 was down by some 28.3 percent year-on-year in the third week of October. One reason for falling rate levels was air demand flowing back to ocean freight.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, we need to monitor the situation carefully, especially in case there are regional lockdowns in China again,\u201d cautioned Leung.<\/p>\n
Writing for the Baltic Exchange, Bruce Chan, Director & Senior Analyst, Global Logistics & Future Mobility Equity Research, Stifel, said there were few signs of any sort of pre-peak air cargo build-up this year, with gradual declines apparent on most trade lanes throughout September.<\/p>\n
\u201cUltimately, we expect these trends to continue,\u201d explained Chan. \u201cGiven more inventory in the system, more fluidity in the supply chain, less residual boost from fiscal and stimulus policy, and uncertainty over the direction of the global economy, we do not believe there will be much of a peak.\u201d<\/p>\n
Room for optimism?<\/h2>\n
Japan offers some room for optimism, however. Inflation levels there are relatively low and are expected to fall soon. According to Nomura, the \u201cpost-pandemic resumption of economic activity in Japan will soften the impact of a recession expected in the US\u201d.<\/p>\n
Chan\u2019s analysis also offers some crumbs of comfort. \u201cWe believe pricing is likely to remain structurally higher than pre-pandemic levels for some time due to a number of factors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGeopolitical instability is keeping a cap on supply even as passenger belly capacity is coming back online.\u00a0 Economic uncertainty is also giving some providers pause when it comes to augmenting their fleets, in our view.<\/p>\n

Sales are expected to nearly double by 2025, reaching USD $2 trillion, according to one estimate from Euromonitor International<\/a>.<\/p>\nThe sector is being propelled by a fast-growing base of digital consumers and merchants, an acceleration in food delivery services, and the ongoing development of digital infrastructure, including mobile connectivity. This will help the region reach a USD $1 trillion digital economy by 2030, according to research from Google, Temasek and Bain<\/a>.<\/p>\nASEAN is also a major export region<\/a> for electronic machinery and equipment, with Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam recognized as global leaders in producing integrated circuits, semiconductor components, and hard drives.<\/p>\nThe regional impact of the pandemic was initially severe. Research from Fortune shows<\/a> that the semiconductor market, for example, declined 0.20 percent in 2020. Nomura expects the Europe area, which is suffering from surging energy prices, to be in recession from Q42022 until the end of 2023. Inflation levels there are relatively low and are expected to fall soon. Global trade and investment suffered an unprecedented shock as Covid-19 constrained the production and transport of many goods. Research shows<\/a> that in 2020, global trade fell by 8.9 percent, the steepest drop since the 2008 global financial crisis.<\/p>\n Trade in goods, however, also proved remarkably resilient, and a key plank<\/a> underpinning economic recovery. While goods trade fell by more than 5 percent in 2020, it bounced back by more than 10 percent<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n The Asia-Pacific region has been critical to this rebound. Trade here grew almost 30 percent in the first three quarters of 2021, compared with global growth of about 28 percent, according to the Asian Development Bank<\/a> (ADB).<\/p>\n However, a vital question is whether any pandemic-related shifts will be permanent. Can trade remain an attractive source of growth for Asia Pacific? Which countries are likely to achieve the strongest trade growth in future, and in which sectors might new growth emerge?<\/p>\n The overall outlook is bright for trade growth in Asia Pacific. The International Monetary Fund<\/a> still describes it as the world\u2019s most dynamic region, despite recent headwinds to economic recovery such as inflation and commodity price spillovers from the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n That confidence is echoed by the ADB<\/a>, which forecasts that developing economies in Asia will grow 5.2 percent in 2023, thanks to a robust recovery in domestic demand and continued export expansion.<\/p>\n The DHL Trade Growth Atlas 2022<\/a> tells a similar story. From the year 2000 to 2021, East Asia and Pacific has seen a tremendous trade volume growth of 271 percent, and this is set to grow even further.
