<\/p><p>Vietnam is a fast-rising star in global manufacturing. With China <a href=\"https:\/\/lot.dhl.com\/trade-war-accelerates-shift-of-production-from-china\/\">experiencing a fallout<\/a> from its trade war with the United States, Vietnam has been welcoming manufacturers keen to shift production away from China. It <a href=\"http:\/\/news.chinhphu.vn\/Home\/FDI-sector-remains-integral-part-of-economy\/20202\/38951.vgp\">scored its biggest annual flow<\/a> of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2019 and gained more attention as an alternative hub when Covid-19 disrupted China\u2019s manufacturing systems and pummeled supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam\u2019s resilience to the impacts of the pandemic in 2020 meant it was able to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.gov.vn\/Home\/Vietnamese-economy-grows-564-in-first-half\/20216\/44406.vgp\">bounce back quickly<\/a>. Its economy expanded 2.9 percent last year and export value rose 28.4 percent in the first half of 2021 from a year earlier, making it a rare economic success story during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3hksC2SuOsc\" width=\"100%\" height=\"538\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Even as it recently suffered its worst Covid-19 outbreak yet, the country is showing signs of regaining its economic and manufacturing momentum. IHS Markit\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ihsmarkit.com\/research-analysis\/vietnam-economy-rebounds-after-third-quarter-gdp-contraction-Nov21.html\">Vietnam Manufacturing Purchasing Managers\u2019 Index (PMI) for October 2021 rebounded<\/a> to 52.1 in October 2021 after falling to 40.2 the previous month. Reforms to open up the economy over the past few decades have pushed Vietnam\u2019s GDP per capita of roughly $500 (in 2019 U.S. dollars) in 1985 to its current status as a middle-income country with a GDP per capita of $2,715.<\/p>\n<p>Such policies to boost international trade flows have also placed Vietnam high up on the Trade pillar of the Global Connectedness Index. Apple supplier Foxconn recently received approval to build a US$270 million (\u20ac228 million) plant in the province of Bac Giang. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.chinhphu.vn\/Home\/Foxconn-invests-US-270-mln-project-in-Bac-Giang\/20211\/42707.vgp\">According to the Vietnamese government<\/a>, Foxconn has so far invested US$1.5 billion in Vietnam and plans to bring in a total of US$700 million this year.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is Samsung, one of the early major investors in Vietnam. They add that they do not see other Asian economies \u201cfully replicating Vietnam\u2019s role in the long run\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To support economic recovery, \u201cit\u2019s critical that the government curbs the infections, accelerates the vaccination drive, insulates the major manufacturing production sites from Covid-19, and protects the poor and most vulnerable,\u201d says
