This system saves raw materials while reducing the energy needed for production by 70 percent. From zero waste goals to sustainable deliveries, Decathlon Thailand is sprinting toward its carbon emissions goal. <\/p>

Around the world, tackling the threat of climate change and embracing sustainability is becoming a top business priority. A recent survey of <\/span>global business leaders<\/span><\/a> found that in 2024, 52 percent of organizations expect to increase their investments in sustainability, while 61 percent view a lack of sustainable practices as an existential threat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Decathlon is no exception. As the global sports brand and sports retailing business, Decathlon <\/span>has set science-based targets<\/span><\/a> that are consistent with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These include a global commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and reducing its absolute emissions by 20 percent by 2026 compared to 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

Decathlon Thailand has also launched a raft of ambitious initiatives to help it meet these targets, such as committing to zero waste to disposal by 2026 and eco-designing 100 percent of its products by the same year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClimate change threatens the world we live in, and without change \u2013 on every level \u2013 our planet is in peril. That is why we aim to be a driving force and a beacon of light for a sustainable future\u201d said Sira Juntrasook, Sustainability Leader at Decathlon Thailand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from its global corporate sustainability commitments, Decathlon Thailand has also faced strict regulations on sustainable energy in its home market of Thailand. Thailand\u2019s energy efficiency laws dictate that factories must submit sustainability reports to regulatory bodies every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

But by drawing on strong internal governance models, based on constant feedback loops across the organization\u2019s ecosystem, the Decathlon Thailand team has charted a bold sustainability strategy adapted to the Thailand market, while staying true to the Decathlon brand\u2019s global mission.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike every country team under the Decathlon umbrella, we are accountable for defining a suitable sustainable strategy for our market. With that freedom comes a huge responsibility to get it right,\u201d said Juntrasook.<\/span><\/p>\n

Investing in sustainable manufacturing processes<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Decathlon Thailand took its first steps toward implementing a sustainability strategy when it began to invest in sustainable product design and manufacturing processes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlong with using more recycled materials in our products, we started exploring new ways to reduce energy consumption in our main factories across the country, which covers 90 percent of our production capacity. That included installing new equipment that uses less water and energy to create and finish our products,\u201d <\/span>Juntrasook<\/span> explained.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The organization has also begun working with suppliers to improve their sustainability performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want our suppliers to commit to the same science-based targets that we have, to limit our planet\u2019s temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels,\u201d said Juntrasook. \u201cSo, we request that our partners collaborate with us on implementing emissions reduction projects. We have also developed a system where suppliers disclose their monthly emissions to us. If the data indicates that targets are not being met, we will jump in with tools and support for how to address that.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Decathlon Thailand decided to deepen its sustainability approach to include downstream processes such as retailing. That meant finding ways to help its retail outlets reduce the environmental impact of their operations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe seek to deploy renewable electricity to help power the business. That includes switching to renewable sources and optimizing cooling systems to reduce energy consumption,\u201d said Juntrasook.<\/span><\/p>\n

With its four standalone stores, the organization is taking further measures, such as installing solar panels on the roofs to power up store operations. Decathlon Thailand is also trying to approach the building owners of their physical stores to arrange for renewable electricity plans for their stores stationed in malls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other ways the organization is working to reduce its environmental impact include recycling plastics, cardboard, and metal waste, and reducing single-use cardboard packaging and plastics across the organization\u2019s logistics and retail operations. A portion of its trash is sent to a waste-to-energy plant in Thailand, where it is converted into electricity. At the same time, product lifecycles are extended through repair, or upcycling.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe strongly encourage our teams not to throw away what can be reused. We currently redistribute our plastic clothes hangers to be reused in our factories and stores. And leftover and broken hangers are sent to plastics recycling facilities,\u201d Juntrasook reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the Decathlon Thailand team seeks to accelerate towards its sustainability goals, it has found it pays to be courageous enough to start a sustainable trend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tackling Scope 3 emissions with sustainable <\/span>logistics<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

While most companies are dedicated to tackling emissions on scopes 1 and 2, scope 3 emissions, also known as indirect carbon emissions, are a lot harder to tackle. Scope 3 emissions are a consequence of the company\u2019s activities outside their direct control, extending to the stakeholders they work with, and the facilities they do not own. This makes Scope 3 emissions tougher to track, report, and hence reduce.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

However,\u00a0 according to research by PwC, scope 3 emissions <\/span><\/span>typically contribute 65 to 95 percent of most companies\u2019 carbon impact<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Hoping to address the bulk of its carbon emissions, Decathlon Thailand\u2019s sustainability approach emphasizes a combination of carbon <\/span><\/span>insetting<\/span><\/span><\/a> \u2013 changing how it does business within its value chain \u2013 and offsetting emissions using carbon credits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sustainable logistics emphasizes using alternative fuels, electric vehicles, and optimized transportation routes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also promotes energy efficiency across the logistics network, such as implementing warehouse energy management systems. Together, these steps help businesses reduce their overall carbon footprint.<\/span><\/p>\n

Decathlon Thailand transports most of its stock in bulk by ocean freight, which typically takes two to three months, but sample shipments require speedier delivery processes via air transport. As such, Decathlon Thailand\u2019s production team faced the challenge of getting Decathlon Thailand\u2019s sample sportswear pieces to European development teams as fast as possible and sustainably.<\/span><\/p>\n

To improve carbon efficiency on their sample deliveries, Decathlon Thailand engaged DHL Express Thailand<\/a>, and signed on to its <\/span>GoGreen Plus service<\/span><\/b><\/a>, allowing them to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which is produced from waste oil, for their sample shipments.<\/span><\/p>\n

More importantly, GoGreen Plus is aligned with Decathlon\u2019s Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) philosophy\u00a0and customers can use it to<\/span> measure and quantify their voluntary emission reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSigning on for the GoGreen Plus program has helped us reduce our scope 3 emissions, which are the indirect GHG emissions within our supply chain. In the first year alone, signing up for the GoGreen Plus program has helped us reduce up to 30 percent of carbon emissions on our sample deliveries compared to our previous results,\u201d Juntrasook reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>s a result, a<\/span>ctivities like transport, packaging, storage, and transport are<\/span> experiencing a sustainability <\/span>revolution<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some ways <\/span>companies can get off on the right foot <\/span>by implementing<\/span> sustainable practices at the start of the supply chain<\/span> to reduce<\/span> their<\/span> carbon footprint<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

As<\/span> sustainability becomes a growing focus for consumers, <\/span>companies are <\/span>becoming increasingly invested in sustainable causes.<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, <\/span>the <\/span>Singaporean company<\/span> The Sustainability Project<\/span><\/a> is laser-focused on being sustainable, as its name suggests. Their packaging is 100 percent recycled, and the company has been using materials collected since 2018. This means that everything, down to the tape made from recycled cereal boxes<\/span> that<\/span> are<\/span> used to secure packaging<\/span>, is experiencing a second lease of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

This ensures that the impact on the environment is mitigated by reducing single<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span><\/span>use <\/span>packaging <\/span>materials that are disposed of just after a few hours in transit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One box, many lifetimes<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

However, what happens after this recycled packaging reaches the consumer? If it is not passed on and recycled, how much of the environmental impact was mitigated? <\/span>Is there a more sustainable<\/span> long<\/span>–<\/span>term<\/span> solution<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>\n

Companies such as <\/span>Returnity<\/span><\/a>\u00a0have come up with a solution. They have made it possible for boxes used as packaging to be returned and enter the circular economy, to be reused once more<\/span>. By making the return of such packaging materials more accessible, they are kept in use for as long as possible, reducing waste.<\/span><\/p>\n

Optica<\/span>rton<\/span> uses<\/span> algorithms<\/span> to<\/span> compute optimum packing<\/span> solutions by calculating<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>package dimensions, making shipping recommendations such as the required protective materials, or even split<\/span>ting<\/span> deliveries into several consignments to improve efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n

On top of reducing waste materials, this<\/span> reduces carbon emissions, as deliveries and shipments are made in the most carbon-efficient order.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the biggest office buildings in Europe, One Angel Square, has one of the highest sustainability ratings in the world. By adhering to bio-climatic advanced techniques, it aims to reduce waste. Its main hall is designed to maximize natural light and reduce dependency on artificial lighting.<\/span><\/p>\n

DHL<\/span> Supply Chain<\/span> Singapore<\/span> has<\/span> also<\/span> partnered with BeeBryte, an energy intelligence and automation firm, to anticipate thermal needs in buildings and manage existing cooling systems more efficiently. <\/span>Beebryte\u2019<\/span>s smart heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) unit control and optimization software <\/span>automatically adjusts the HVAC in response to real-time conditions,<\/span> minimiz<\/span>ing<\/span> energy consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its inception in 2019, t<\/span>he partnershi<\/span>p\u00a0<\/span>has seen up to 40 percent savings in energy costs<\/span> for DHL Su<\/span>pply Chain\u2019s warehouses<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

All new DHL warehouses have a carbon-neutral design. This means that carbon reduction is 75 percent or more, with a maximum of 25 percent of energy offset by renewable energy sources. These warehouses are also constructed with sustainable materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

By 2030, more than 90 percent of energy supplied to these buildings will be sustainably<\/span> produced by renewable energy. More than 50 percent of heating will be sustainably powered in the same year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Companies partnering with DHL as their logistics partner can reduce their carbon emissions<\/span> through the GoGreen Plus program<\/a>,<\/span> and play an active role in contributing to a carbon-neutral future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Green light for <\/span>carbon-friendly culture<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

However, f<\/span>or s<\/span>ustainability <\/span>to<\/span> take root<\/span>,<\/span> the<\/span> culture of carbon-friendliness has to start with the company’s people, not just <\/span>via<\/span> corporate measures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking the sustainability approach should also<\/span> consist of actively<\/span> involv<\/span>ing<\/span> and rewarding employees<\/span>. Citibank<\/span> inculcates these sustainability values in its employees through its<\/span> group-wide<\/span> Step Up<\/span> and Drink Up<\/span> initiative<\/span>s, which<\/span> encourage<\/span> employees to take the stairs instead of the elevators<\/span>, and<\/span> hydrate by refilling water bottles<\/span>,<\/span> translating <\/span>to <\/span>a significant <\/span>number of water bottles saved.<\/span><\/p>\n

Companies can adopt similar strategies in motivating their employees to be more conscious of energy-saving efforts, by rewarding employees with credits or vouchers which can be exchanged at partner vendors, if employees go the extra mile to ensure that waste office materials like papers are reused responsibly.<\/span><\/p>\n

This motivates individuals to be more active in their role in reducing the effects of climate change on the Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Companies can incorporate this practice into their processes <\/span>by making<\/span> recycling more accessible. Recycling bins should be abundant and equipped with clear signs to inform users of the appropriate bins to sort their waste into. Recycling schedules can also be set up, to inculcate these habits throughout the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, employees should be consulted on how sustainability can be made easier and more frequent.
