Strategically positioned in the heart of Southeast Asia, Malaysia is a veritable gateway to the region<\/a>. Its major shipping routes and international airports connect businesses to key Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The nation\u2019s locational advantage enables it to offer faster delivery times and reduced transportation costs for efficient regional operations.<\/p>\n

It comes as little wonder that Malaysia\u2019s capital city, Greater Kuala Lumpur, is globally recognized as an ideal nearshoring hub. It serves as a conduit for businesses to bring their operations closer to their partners and customers in Southeast Asia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is especially important in today\u2019s global economic climate, where rising labor costs and inflation<\/a> have pushed businesses to explore alternatives like nearshoring<\/a>, or outsourcing business processes to a nearby country or location to trim their overheads.<\/p>\n

Malaysia boleh: The Malaysian advantage<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It is easy to see why Malaysia is a prime hub for nearshoring in Southeast Asia. Besides its favorable geographic location, Malaysia boasts abundant natural resources vital for producing advanced materials.<\/p>\n

In its New Industrial Master Plan 2030<\/a>, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry identified graphene, nitinol, rare earth, and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) polymers as Malaysia\u2019s core advanced materials. These materials support the country\u2019s electric vehicle (EV), aerospace, and healthcare industries.<\/p>\n

Its culturally diverse population complements Malaysia\u2019s geographical and natural resources. Predominantly comprising Malay, Chinese, and Indian ethnic groups, Malaysians are proficient in speaking at least two languages<\/a>, with a high level of proficiency in English. Thus, its workforce is well-equipped to bridge language and cultural barriers, connecting Malaysian businesses to the rest of Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

To solidify this advantage, the Malaysian government has proactively developed technical education. In March 2024, the government expanded its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program centers into teaching factories<\/a>, providing students with direct access to real industry training and easing their integration into industrial environments.<\/p>\n

According to the Malaysia Investment Development Authority, Malaysia\u2019s foreign direct investments (FDI) reached RM 85.4 billion<\/a> (\u20ac18.17 billion) in H1 2024, signaling a healthy and robust economy.<\/p>\n

Malaysia counts established players like Intel, Panasonic, and Bosch among its E&E ranks. The island state of Penang is Malaysia\u2019s leading E&E hub<\/a>, specializing in semiconductor manufacturing. This is why Bosch selected Penang to nearshore a test center for chips and sensors in 2023<\/a>. Costing \u20ac65 million, this test center bridges Bosch and its partners in Southeast Asia and the wider Asian region. By nearshoring its semiconductor testing and quality assurance operations to Penang, Bosch enjoys shorter delivery times and routes, in turn strengthening its ability to serve its customers within Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

Malaysia\u2019s strength in E&E also caught the eye of DHL Supply<\/a> Chain<\/u>, prompting it to build four new warehouse facilities totaling 113,000 square meters in 2023: two in Penang, and one each in Central and Southern Malaysia. Automated robotics is pivotal to DHL Supply Chain\u2019s warehousing operations in Penang, and it is utilized to support and streamline Malaysia\u2019s semiconductor and tech-manufacturing supply chains.<\/p>\n

Aerospace is another major industry in Malaysia that follows the same nearshoring trajectory as E&E. Maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) and manufacturing are the core drivers of Malaysia\u2019s aerospace industry<\/a>, contributing 45 and 49 percent of total revenue respectively. Nearshoring is a common strategy deployed by aerospace firms<\/a> for these two purposes, done to diversify supply chains and thus reduce delivery times.<\/p>\n

One such firm is major U.S.-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing. Starting as an aircraft supplier for Malaysia Airlines in 1972, Boeing recently acquired its first wholly-owned manufacturing facility in 2023<\/a>. Initially owned by Aerospace Composites Malaysia Sdn Bhd (ACM), the facility empowers Boeing with the capability to manufacture its aircraft composite products and sub-assemblies. In turn, Boeing can streamline its supply chain within Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

Medical technology<\/h3>\n

Aside from E&E and aerospace, the medical technology industry has also extensively deployed nearshoring in Malaysia. Asia\u2019s burgeoning healthcare sector has prompted Malaysia to strategically position itself as one of the region\u2019s leading offshoring hubs for medical devices<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Singapore and Japan are among the key export destinations for medical devices, accounting for RM4 billion (\u20ac800 million), or 12.8 percent of Malaysia\u2019s total medical device exports in 2022.<\/p>\n

Shoring up against potential supply chain challenges in Malaysia<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While Malaysia has been an ideal nearshoring location for the Southeast Asia region, implementing a nearshoring strategy in Malaysia comes with specific challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To begin, businesses must pay close attention to Malaysia’s regulatory and political environments. While the Malaysian government has meticulously built a stable business environment open to foreign investments, businesses must still do their due diligence in ensuring their operations comply with local regulations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For instance, manufacturers must comply with the Customs (Prohibition of Exports) Order 2023 guidelines when exporting goods out of Malaysia. Under this Order, manufacturers must apply for export permits for items placed under Conditional Prohibition and declare them where necessary. Taxes may also be levied to facilitate domestic processing.<\/p>\n

Malaysia also has protectionist policies<\/a> to safeguard its domestic market and business sectors and maintain its cultural and religious norms.<\/p>\n

And although English is the de facto language used in Malaysia\u2019s business circles, it is still helpful for businesses to sharpen their proficiency in other languages like Malay and Chinese to improve communication and collaboration, which will ease relationship building with suppliers and workers, reducing the time needed to establish core processes and align expectations.<\/p>\n

Despite these challenges businesses, Malaysia still stands strong as a nearshoring location due to its strategic geographical location, abundance of natural resources, and multilingual and skilled workforce. In the aftermath of disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and escalating geopolitical tensions, Asia\u2019s logistics and supply chains are evolving. Companies are omnisourcing to reduce supply chain reliance on any single nation, shifting their priorities from cost and efficiency to trust and resilience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest challenge lies in managing a supply chain transition while balancing costs and the ability to scale with volume fluctuations. Businesses want to diversify their supply chains without losing the economic benefits of manufacturing in Asia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Southeast Asia, in particular, emerges as a preferred omnisourcing destination, due to its economic partnerships with both the U.S. and China. Seasoned in manufacturing, ASEAN economies offer valuable skills, capacity, and expertise at competitive rates. As Vietnam continues to thrive in the manufacturing of apparel and footwear, semiconductor manufacturing industries, Thailand is making strides toward its goal of becoming Asia\u2019s next electric vehicles (EV) hub. But apart from the usual benefactors of the Plus One strategy, the rest of the ASEAN countries are also rising to meet the demand in the growing sectors of technology and retail.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Singapore \u2013 A hub for electronics and chemicals manufacturing<\/h2>\n

Home to the world\u2019s busiest maritime transport network, Singapore boasts connections to more than 600 ports in 123 countries via over 200 shipping lines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Despite its small local market, Singapore has capitalized on its central location and advanced infrastructure to boost its international trade and logistics network, by functioning as a trans-shipment hub offering value-added logistics services. <\/span>The country\u2019s high operational efficiency, and strong innovation ecosystem have also earned it its status as the second-easiest country in Asia in terms of conducting business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The nation\u2019s ability to attract businesses and facilitate their trade activities has catalyzed industrial<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>expansion, leading to significant growth in its major manufacturing sectors. According to S&P Global, the country\u2019s electronics manufacturing output is dominated by semiconductors-related production, and accounts for 40 percent of manufacturing output. <\/span>On the other hand, the energy and chemicals industry was the second- largest contributor to manufacturing output in Singapore, accounting for one-fifth of the country’s total manufacturing output in 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both these sectors experienced significant growth in demand. Singapore\u2019s electronics output rose by 5.1 percent, while energy and chemicals output increased by 2.3 percent year-on-year in July 2023.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Energy
Energy companies are heavily focused on Jurong Island due to its close proximity to the Tuas Megaport to connect to other markets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Jurong Island is the country\u2019s designated hub for activities for the energy and chemicals sector. Its highly-integrated infrastructure closely connects both customers and suppliers, forming an integrated ecosystem, featuring utilities and logistics service providers. This creates strong production synergies that allow companies to save costs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its opening in October 2000, the industrial hub has attracted over S$50 billion worth of investments, from over 100 companies, including major energy and chemical companies such as Exxonmobil and Shell.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another industry experiencing exponential growth is that of EV production. Singapore\u2019s EV adoption rate has grown rapidly in the past two years, largely due to the Singapore government\u2019s comprehensive EV Roadmap. Under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the government aims to improve infrastructure to support the country\u2019s growing number of EV users. This includes the addition of 40,000 in public carparks, and 20,000 charging points in private premises by 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The growth of these industries has in turn, led to a growing demand for logistics services for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>dangerous chemicals. <\/span>To support these growing manufacturing sectors,<\/span> DHL Supply Chain has acquired<\/span> a new state-of-the-art facility in Tuas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he logistics company has also acquired an existing 60,000 square meters of space from a local business to equip its network with the infrastructure to support six classes of dangerous goods: flammable gas; toxic chemicals; flammable liquids; corrosive materials; oxidizers and other miscellaneous dangerous goods, including EV batteries. The investment will increase its warehouse capacity in the country by 50 percent, surpassing 230,000 square meters of space.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malaysia – The back-end technology manufacturer<\/h2>\n

Similar to its Singaporean neighbor, Malaysia is heavily invested in electronics manufacturing, taking on the role of back-end producer, focusing on the manufacturing and assembly of semiconductors for consumer parts and consumer electronic products.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Malaysia\u2019s <\/span>base of technology or electronics manufacturing activities, Penang hosts a strong network of over 3,000 diversified and competent local suppliers covering automation, electronics, packaging, plastics, precision engineering and metal work, and software development, among others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Penang has attracted Malaysia’s third-highest manufacturing FDI inflow, contributing 50 percent of the country\u2019s key investments in electronics and electrical, machinery and equipment, and scientific and measuring equipment industries. The island-state boasts a supportive investment ecosystem via the InvestPenang program, and the Penang Development Corporation, and has continuously attracted the investments of technology and healthcare companies. For instance, U.S. semiconductor manufacturer LAM research pledged up to MYR1 billion (\u20ac198 million) in investments in February 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To support Malaysia’s increasing demand and diversified sourcing options, DHL Supply Chain Malaysia has recently added 113,000 square meters of warehouse space through four new facilities, with two in Penang, and one each in central and Southern Malaysia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a very strong footprint in Penang, with automated robotics that make the lives of our people easier while supporting our customers with their agenda around automation,\u201d said<\/span> Andries Retief, CEO, DHL Supply Chain, Southeast Asia<\/span>. \u201cOur upcoming fifth facility in Penang, PLH5, is equipped with state-of-the-art automated pallet storage and retrieval system and goods-to-person robotics technology to handle small parts picking, to support Malaysia\u2019s semiconductor and tech-manufacturing industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The logistics company is also looking to boost transportation capabilities, investing in fleets and establishing its first connected control tower in Kuala Lumpur, which will equip its centralized transport services with end-to-end visibility.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indonesia \u2013 A rapidly growing e-commerce market<\/h2>\n

While Southeast Asia\u2019s advanced economies focus on the foundations of the supply chain, its developing economies are also growing at great speed, leveraging technological advancements to boost their B2C sectors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the world\u2019s fourth most populous country, Indonesia\u2019s economy is growing rapidly, highly driven by its growing e-commerce sector. <\/span>Standard Chartered Bank projects that the country\u2019s economy is expected to grow rapidly in the next decade, from US$4.2 trillion (\u20ac3.97 trillion) in 2020 to US$10.1 trillion (\u20ac9.54 trillion) by 2030 to become the world\u2019s fourth largest economy in terms of purchasing power.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022, Indonesia was reported to have one of the highest internet penetration rates in Asia at nearly 75.47 percent. Propelled by the surge in digital adoption during the pandemic, d<\/span>igital payment methods and mobile commerce became more prominent.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Major cities in Indonesia like Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung have since become significant hubs for e-commerce activities.<\/span> As several major e-commerce platforms including Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Shopee, and Lazada have mature operations in Indonesia, these platforms capitalized on the timely transition to e-commerce by offering diverse product categories, boosting the sector\u2019s growth significantly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIndonesia, as Southeast Asia’s leading economy and one of the largest e-commerce markets in the region, provides significant business opportunities across all sectors,\u201d noted Retief. \u201cAs such, the logistics and supply chain sectors can expect to increase their efficiencies here and attract more demand from companies wanting to diversify their supply chains. Philippines \u2013 Localization of fast-moving consumer goods supply chains<\/h2>\n

Supply chain disruptions and limited access to grocery stores during the pandemic’s initial phases led to disrupted routine purchases in the Philippines. This triggered two key trends in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, there was a notable surge in online shopping and e-commerce platforms, prompting FMCG businesses to expand their reach through online channels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, Filipino consumers were compelled to switch brands due to product unavailability, creating opportunities for FMCG players to increase their market share in a market once known for brand loyalty.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A growing demand for FMCG products such as food, groceries and beauty products in the Philippines has led to businesses pivoting towards the sector.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Having learnt their lesson from the pandemic, <\/span>FMCG producers in the Philippines are looking to localize production,<\/span> partnering up with local farmers and small-scale producers in the Philippines to locally source stable supply of raw materials for the FMCG sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Domestic manufacturers offer certain advantages compared to their overseas counterparts. They are often smaller and thus adapt more easily to changing demand, and they may also have more product specialization as they focus on fewer markets. However, strict local sourcing is not always possible, as some inputs are not yet fully available or in sufficient supply to meet domestic demand. Nestl\u00e9, for example, buys 60 percent of all coffee beans produced in the Philippines, but this only meets 30 percent of its needs in the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, with its large population of over 100 million people, the Philippines is an attractive destination for FMCG production, as its low labor costs and substantial domestic market for FMCG products, offers companies opportunities for both manufacturing and sales. For instance, FMCG giant Unilever invested \u20ac80 million in a new factory in the Philippines, to increase global production levels for its Beauty and Wellbeing and Personal Care businesses by 15 percent.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the Philippines\u2019 retail market expands, adaptable warehouse capabilities and a strong local network are crucial to support the market\u2019s many growth opportunities. To enhance the reach of its transport network, DHL Supply Chain has partnered with JG Summit to launch DHL Summit Solutions Inc (DSSI)<\/a>. Combining JG Summit\u2019s market knowledge with DHL\u2019s specialized logistics expertise, the joint venture provides greater visibility and control over shipments through the MySupplyChain Transport Management System (TMS) and a fully digital B2B Central Transport Control Tower system. DSSI also offers transactional efficiencies with automated route and load-planning to improve transport capabilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, to boost warehouse productivity, DHL Supply Chain is using SmartOps-enabled wearable devices to connect DHL\u2019s employees to its data and IT systems via a suite of digital applications, providing real-time information. The seamless integration improves decision-making by streamlining processes in the warehouse, optimizing operational efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n

DHL Supply Chain plans to invest EUR350 million in Southeast Asia over the next five years<\/strong><\/h2>

To serve the Southeast Asian markets experiencing rapid growth, DHL Supply Chain is set to invest EUR 350 million to expand its warehousing capacity, workforce and sustainability initiatives in Southeast Asia. As part of DHL Supply Chain\u2019s global strategic investments totaling EUR1.35 billion globally over the past year, the investment aims to enhance supply chain infrastructure, workforce development, as well as automation, digitalization and sustainability, supporting the omnisourcing strategies of customers across Latin America, India and Southeast Asia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In line with this goal, DHL Supply Chain will increase its current 1.6 million square meters of warehouse space in Southeast Asia by 25 percent, or 400,000 square meters, across facilities in West Java, Indonesia; Penang, Malaysia; the Philippines and Singapore. It also plans to create more than 3,000 job opportunities across the four markets in 2024.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are not just increasing our capacity, but we are building logistics centers that can cater to future demand for our customers through robotics and sustainability initiatives,\u201d said Bilbao.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no place like home. This adage is starting to ring true for a growing number of businesses around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even before the pandemic, companies had already started considering the feasibility of shifting operations back to their home market, known as \u201creshoring\u201d. Some have returned closer to home, and this is called \u201cnearshoring\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both options stem from companies recognizing the benefits of reshoring to boost efficiency and resilience in their global supply chains. The geographical proximity could also potentially lower logistics costs compared to offshoring strategies. For instance, the rising labor costs in popular supplier countries like China have chipped away at the cost benefits of producing goods there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Covid-19 outbreak firmly bolstered the case for reshoring and nearshoring by exposing how vulnerable companies\u2019 long global supply chains had become. As lockdowns in China and logjammed ports around the world led to massive operational disruptions, companies started to source for products closer to home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, it came as little surprise that <\/span>nine in 10 U.S. manufacturing company executives had already considered or conducted reshoring operations between 2019 and 2021, as a <\/span>survey<\/span><\/a> by consultancy Kearney showed.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the pandemic faded, the quest for more resilient supply chains became more urgent, catapulting nearshoring into the corporate limelight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Daunting costs of disruption<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

More companies across the United States, Europe, and Asia are openly discussing \u201creshoring\u201d and \u201cnearshoring\u201d in their earnings calls, according to <\/span>data compiled by HSBC analyst Mark McDonald<\/span><\/a>. He noted a \u201cnotable jump\u201d of such mentions over the past three years to a record number in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rather than just a Plan B to back up their primary offshoring operations, more companies now see these options as a key prong of a new supply chain management strategy. This strategy focuses on diversifying global supply chains to avoid a single point of failure while exerting greater control and visibility over production by bringing it closer to home.<\/span><\/p>\n

This growing corporate focus on nearshoring comes as rising geopolitical risks have exacerbated the challenges of managing complex supply chains and offshoring operations. These risks include the U.S.-China trade dispute, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the U.S. government\u2019s push to protect strategic industries like semiconductors.<\/span><\/p>\n

The costs of supply chain disruptions caused by these factors are significant: <\/span>up to US<\/span><\/a>$4 trillion <\/span>(\u20ac<\/span><\/a>3.65 trillion)<\/span><\/a> in revenue may have evaporated due to supply chain disruptions<\/span><\/a> in 2020 alone, according to a 2021 survey of U.S. and European business chiefs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost two-thirds of the multinational companies (MNCs) surveyed said they suffered revenue losses between 6 percent and 20 percent. The study also showed that MNCs experienced reputational damage due to missed deadlines, delayed product launches, and <\/span>higher operational costs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The benefits of being nearby<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

Nearshoring can mitigate such risks, as closer geographical proximity can allow for<\/span> faster time-to-market as companies can reduce the transit time needed to get products to their point of sale.<\/span><\/p>\n

One example of an industry in the U.S. that is capitalizing on the nearshoring trend is the fashion industry, particularly designer \u201ccraft\u201d garments produced by small-scale local factories. Shifting production to these homegrown suppliers can help fashion brands reduce costs by up to 20 percent, improve time-to-market by up to 50 percent, and cut lead times by up to 70%, according to <\/span>a 2022 report by McKinsey<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reshoring can also allow companies to respond more quickly to contingencies or business changes, as they can exert greater control over the production process through more frequent site visits. There also tend to be fewer cultural barriers when operating at home or in markets close to home, compared to offshore locations halfway across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the <\/span>Kearney study<\/span><\/a>, s<\/span>uch benefits of nearshoring help to explain why 70 percent of U.S. companies with manufacturing plants in Asia were evaluating relocating, had already relocated, or planned to relocate to Mexico, Canada, or Central America in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

Markets like Mexico offer tax incentives, a relatively low-cost labor force, and excellent infrastructure, making it more cost-effective for companies to re-shore there. It has already drawn the <\/span>interest of <\/span>large <\/span>U.S. companies like Tesla<\/span><\/a>, which also has a factory in Shanghai<\/span>. <\/span>Meanwhile, Mexico has<\/span> registered more than US$13 billion in nearshoring investments so far in 2023<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearshoring has also become more compelling for <\/span>SMEs in the U.S. <\/span><\/a>that <\/span><\/a>are keen to take advantage of lower tariffs from the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact, with 88 percent saying they will use suppliers closer to home by next year<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trend is also gaining momentum across other regions. In Asia, <\/span>one-third of the 1,000 business leaders in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Australasia surveyed<\/span><\/a> said they intended to switch to suppliers within their home market or region, citing geopolitical uncertainty as the key reason.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Europe, <\/span>demand for industrial space rose 29 percent in 2022 compared <\/span><\/a>with <\/span><\/a>the previous year<\/span><\/a> as manufacturers sought to reduce dependence on China, according to real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sustainable future of nearshoring<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

All these developments have led research firm Capterra to declare that t<\/span>he nearshoring trend is happening faster than expected.<\/span><\/p>\n

This momentum may continue as more companies commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With <\/span>transportation and energy accounting for\u202f<\/span>75 percent<\/span><\/a> of emissions related to international trade, and long-distance imports generating 10 times more emissions than domestically produced goods, sourcing products from markets that do not <\/span>require water or air transportation<\/span><\/a> is seen as good for the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, <\/span>the shift to nearshoring could\u202f<\/span>reduce<\/span><\/a>\u202fthe share of Asia-originating shipments to the U.S<\/span>.\u202f<\/span>by 20<\/span> percent\u202f<\/span>in 2025 and 40 percent by 2030<\/span>, predicts <\/span>Frederic Neumann, HSBC Chief Asia Economist.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

That said, reshoring is not likely to displace offshoring completely. Asia\u2019s role in global trade remains significant, and it continues to be relatively cost-competitive in sectors such as retail goods.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, its role in companies\u2019 strategy to diversify and de-risk their global supply chains is likely to grow, as companies lean on nearshoring more heavily to cope with supply chain shocks lasting a month or more, which on average <\/span>occur every 3.7 years<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a post-pandemic era marked by macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty, companies are investing more to build resilient supply chains.
