Buoyed by the need for industry alternatives, breakbulk shipping is making a resurgence from the background of the maritime industry. <\/p>

When it comes to shipping goods across oceans, the image most of us have in mind is that of huge ships holding large steel containers arranged and stacked neatly on each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, containerized shipping has been the mainstay for the maritime industry, since it was first introduced back in the 1950s. The advent of containers and intermodal logistics revolutionized the shipping industry, as more containers could be efficiently stacked, allowing more goods to be transported across the seas at lower costs. Over time, the marine transportation industry and the size of ships, trains, trucks, docks and ports increased and expanded to handle the growing use of containers, popularizing containerized shipping worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

But recently, an older, even ancient, form of transporting goods has been making a resurgence. Breakbulk cargo shipping is loading goods individually onto ships and then transporting them over water to their destination. Upstaged by containerized shipping, which made the packing, loading, and transportation of goods much more efficient in the 1990s, breakbulk shipping faded into the background over the decades<\/span>. However, the recent Covid-19 pandemic caused supply chain disruptions and accelerated the energy transition, prompting the need for more flexible shipping options that optimized resources, a gap that breakbulk shipping would fill.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022, ports in the United States, Europe and even Asia reported record growth volumes of breakbulk cargo. At the Northwest Seaport Alliance, volumes surged <\/span>30.7 percent<\/span><\/a> over the previous year, outpacing containerized shipping. King Abdullah Port, in Saudi Arabia, smashed its breakbulk monthly record by handling over <\/span>600,000 tonnes of goods<\/span><\/a> in May 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, as the world is paying greater attention to supply chain flexibility amid post-pandemic global trade shifts, breakbulk is making a comeback, and it is likely here to stay.<\/span><\/p>\n

Breaking it down<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

Disruptions to the supply chain \u2013 triggered by the pandemic \u2013 played a vital role in breakbulk shipping\u2019s short-term resurgence. Freight rates surged during the pandemic to record highs, contributing to inflation and making it very expensive for companies to move products.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, some excess demand shifted to breakbulk, even if the method was less efficient than containerized shipping. This was most evident in the transportation of commodities such as rice, cement and steel. For instance, <\/span>volumes of imported steel at the Port of New Orleans doubled in 2022, growing by 123 percent<\/span><\/a>. Going through smaller ports, which typically serve more breakbulk cargo, instead of the larger ones that accommodate container vessels also helps companies avoid ports facing bottlenecks.<\/span><\/p>\n

A second key factor that has helped grow volumes is the rise of the energy transition. With the United Nations setting a net-zero target by 2030, countries worldwide are moving towards renewable energy sources to offset their carbon footprint. In particular, wind and solar energy are becoming key energy sources for many countries. For instance, U.S. states such as Virginia are devoting large tracts of land to harness the power of the wind through the construction of large wind turbine farms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of these renewable energy facilities, however, require large components such as wind turbines that are not easily moved through containerized shipping. Through the use of algorithms, the software optimizes the carrying capacity and stowage options for breakbulk vessels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Using such technologies can reduce the time taken to plan for routes from days to hours, allowing for breakbulk vessel operators to quickly respond to demand.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park takes shape, DHL Global Forwarding is playing a vital role in transporting breakbulk cargo for the massive energy project. <\/p>

On the outskirts of Dubai, millions of solar panels in neatly arranged rows stand tall under the blistering desert sun.<\/p>\n

Eight years in the making, the 5,000-megawatt (MW) Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park project is still gaining steam, as it enters its fourth and largest of five phases.<\/p>\n

Part of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050<\/a> to reduce the city\u2019s dependence on fossil fuels, the ambitious project aims to provide 75 percent of Dubai\u2019s total power output from clean energy by 2050.<\/p>\n

For the fourth phase of the AED 50 billion (\u20ac11.65 billion) project, construction involves the building of a 600MW parabolic basin complex and the world\u2019s tallest concentrated solar tower at 260 meters.<\/p>\n

Making it happen<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Preparing for the record-breaking project was no walk in the park, according to Nihal Lambay, Projects Manager for DHL Industrial Projects United Arab Emirates (UAE).<\/p>\n

Electrical transformers, with the heaviest weighing up to 250 tons, had to be transported by sea from China and Germany to Dubai\u2019s Jebel Ali Port, where they were offloaded onto trailers for a 110-kilometer journey to the project site.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the process may sound fairly straightforward, it took multiple stakeholders working in tandem to pull this off. In fact, planning began as early as 16 to 18 months before the first move for the project in November this year,\u201d said Nihal.<\/p>\n

The first leg of the move \u2014 a 6,000 nautical-mile journey by sea \u2014 required a heavy lift vessel that would protect the shipment from damage in transit.<\/p>\n

To identify and charter the best-suited vessel, the Industrial Projects teams from China and Dubai worked with their global partners to prepare detailed technical and industrial drawings, and to conduct motion and acceleration studies to understand the stress factors on the transformers during the journey.<\/p>\n

As part of the planning done almost a year ahead of the move, the team in Dubai carried out comprehensive route surveys to map out the precise route from the port to the site \u2014 taking into account the restrictions that could affect the feasibility of the shipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cConducting an in-depth assessment early provides the team ample time to obtain the necessary regulatory approval and complete the paperwork to execute a move like this one,\u201d explained Nihal.<\/p>\n

The preliminary study revealed that the bridges along the route from the port to the site had load and height restrictions that could not accommodate the transport of the breakbulk cargo.<\/p>\n

Together with the customer and sub-contractors, the Industrial Projects team quickly engaged the public road work authorities to seek permission for building bypasses to overcome the structural blockages.<\/p>\n

Such pre-technical studies are just one facet of a successful operation, shared Zarir Bhiwandiwalla, Head of DHL Industrial Projects UAE. As the actual move inches closer, further cargo-specific checks and processes are needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWeeks before the cargo arrival, we completed method statements and transport drawings for the road freight movements. This was followed by a thorough vetting process by our in-house experts on Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) and technical engineering,\u201d said Zarir of the move.<\/p>\n

When the vessel arrived, the team also conducted final site inspections to verify that the conditions were optimal for the move, such as ensuring that were no physical obstacles, poor ground conditions, or missing preparation measures.<\/p>\n

Preparing for the unexpected<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There was little room for error during the move, especially since breakbulk freight movements can only take place between 2 am and 5 am, as mandated by the city\u2019s road authority.<\/p>\n

During the three-hour window, the shipment had to be accompanied by a convoy of police escorts while in transit. In total, the Industrial Projects team completed the move of four transformers within two nights, ahead of the original schedule.<\/p>\n

Smooth shipments like this do not happen by chance, noted Zarir. \u201cOur rigorous risk assessment procedure mitigates the risks involved to the lowest level possible. As part of our standard practice, we consider the crucial factors that can make or break a move,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Elements such as defective equipment, rigging, positioning of the crane, or unstable ground conditions are scenarios that have to be considered by the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor instance, loose sand is a common issue we face here. To ensure stability during the offloading, we implemented ground strengthening measures by laying specialized steel plates that ensure an adequate spread of the load,\u201d explained Nihal.<\/p>\n

For the team that handles up to 60 heavy lifting moves a year, their technical expertise continues to stand the team in good stead.<\/p>\n

With the last phase of the solar park still to come, more freight movements \u2014 including large steel structures and heat exchangers \u2014 are expected to follow.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of the scale of the project and its specific challenges, we adopt the consistent precautions and measures to ensure the safe, efficient delivery of breakbulk shipments for our customers,\u201d said Zarir.<\/p>\n
